‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times’. That’s how Charles Dickens begins one of his novels, and that’s how I feel about the past month. I was on a real high at the start after reaching my lowest weight yet. Then two weeks later I’d had a massive 7½lbs gain and was feeling pretty fed up. I was berating myself for allowing it to happen after I’d worked so hard to lose those last few pounds. I was ‘beating myself up’ as my consultant would say. Then I remembered something TV diet expert Rosemary Conley told me when we met briefly on The Richard and Judy Show: “Look forward, not back.”

I’ve got lots to look forward to this year. We have a big family holiday planned; several significant birthdays and anniversaries to celebrate; a couple of weddings to attend. The icing on the cake would be for me to also make it the year I reach target!

In the past, Christmas and New Year have been real stumbling blocks for me. It has taken me literally months to regain my focus and control, but I’m pleased to report that this year I forced myself back into my healthy eating habits and the week following my half stone gain I lost a whopping 5lbs! That is almost unheard of for me. I can’t begin to explain how good it made me feel!

So, the net result this month is that I’ve maintained after lots of socialising over the busy festive season, and I am feeling very positive and determined about the year ahead. I’ve got a real chance to make it count. 2017 is going to be the best year ever!

So my advice for this month is: look forward, not back. Focus on where you want to go, not where you’ve been. Then take small, regular steps forward to get there!
