I’m definitely feeling fed up with myself. All month I’ve been struggling to stay on plan. It’s as if I’m deliberately sabotaging my efforts because deep down I feel like I don’t deserve to succeed. It’s a kind of punishment for messing up last month, when I gained 5 lbs after having that fantastic 8 lbs weight loss. The psyche of a serial slimmer like myself is certainly a very complicated thing!

I read an article a few days ago about learning to love yourself. It listed five things we can do to improve our relationship with ourselves. Three of the suggestions really struck a chord with me.

The first is to forgive ourselves by letting go of feelings of shame, guilt and self-recrimination. Well, I’ve certainly been feeling all three of them this month! We all have regrets but they don’t have to ruin our life. We need to acknowledge them, learn from them and move on. Think about how much better our lives would be without them! We can’t change the past, but we can most definitely change the future!

The second idea is to be kind to ourselves. Many slimmers are very critical of themselves and set unrealistic expectations about how they should behave, giving themselves a good old ticking off if they fail to live up to the mark. I’m no different. If we can treat ourselves with kindness, as if we are encouraging a friend who is struggling, we can help ourselves get through tough times without adding to the hurt and disappointment we’re already feeling.

Finally, make time for fun. Be sure to factor in time for hobbies or outings to increase self-confidence which will in turn boost our self-belief to achieve our weight loss goals. So there you have it – a plan for the next five weeks or so! All I need to do now is follow it. Easier said than done.
