We’ve experienced some incredibly hot weather recently, and with August fast approaching there is the prospect of more to come. When the weather gets a bit too warm, whether we’re at home, on holiday or on a day trip to the countryside, sitting in the shade whilst gently sipping a cool drink is very inviting, but what if it isn’t quite enough to bring your temperature down? The more adventurous amongst us might feel tempted to take things a step further with a quick dip in the local river, canal or reservoir.
Swimming is a wonderful way to keep fit. It can also be a great social activity, and a quick dip on a scorching day could bring much needed relief. But don’t be tempted to jump into the deep end, so to speak, without doing your research first.
Many of the rivers, canals and in some cases reservoirs in the UK are badly polluted. In addition, jumping or diving into cold water can give you “cold water shock”. If the water is below 15 degrees centigrade, this could affect your breathing, your ability to swim and possibly lead to drowning. Also, there might be unknown items lurking below the surface of the water that could cause injury.
Wild swimming is becoming a popular pastime but it has to be done in a controlled way. If you want to get involved, please join a local group who can offer advice and guidance. Don’t be tempted to go it alone. A group meets regularly at Harthill Reservoir and Thrybergh Country Park offers a designated swimming area with easy access.
Enjoy your summer and STAY SAFE!
