From dripping taps to peeling paint, it’s often the smallest jobs around the home that get ignored the longest. Not because they’re difficult, but because they’re easy to delay.

Here are six simple fixes many people put off, and why they rarely get done.

ONE
Fixing a dripping tap
A constant drip is one of the most common household annoyances… yet also one of the easiest to solve with a new washer or cartridge.

The reason this one lingers for weeks or even months is because it feels minor. There’s no urgency, no immediate consequence. Until, of course, the wasted water – and the sound! – becomes impossible to ignore.

TWO

Re-sealing the bathroom
Worn or mouldy sealant around baths and sinks is rarely urgent… until that is an ingress of water ends up making marks on the ceiling below, and then you have real problems.

Most people put off resealing because it’s messy, fiddly and easy to get wrong. So if you’re put off, get a pro in to do it for you before that trickle of water becomes a shower of problems.

THREE

Tightening loose handles and hinges
That slightly wobbly door handle or squeaky cupboard hinge is a five-minute fix with a screwdriver. Yet because it doesn’t stop anything from working, it gets ignored.

Over time, though, small movements become bigger issues.

FOUR

Touching up paintwork
Scuffed walls, chipped skirting boards and marked corners are part of everyday life. A quick touch-up can make a room feel instantly fresher, yet it’s often postponed. Why? Because it feels like the start of a bigger job.

People worry it will lead to repainting an entire room… so they leave the small fix undone.

FIVE
Clearing gutters and drains
Out of sight, out of mind. Gutters and outdoor drains are easy to forget… until there’s a problem. Clearing leaves and debris is a relatively simple task, albeit many people don’t want to scale the heights. In this case, get a professional in to do the job for you. It’ll be quick and relatively cheap.

SIX

Replacing lightbulbs and fixtures
It sounds almost too simple, but many homes have lights that don’t work properly.. or at all. Whether it’s a hard-to-reach fitting or uncertainty over the correct bulb type, people put it off. Instead, they adapt, living with dim corners or unused spaces, rather than taking a few minutes to restore proper lighting.

While these jobs aren’t difficult, busy schedules dictate situations where we have to prioritise the tasks we do.

In this instance, it may be better to call in help to get the job done, rather than see a problem persist which could, in time, worsen.
